When I was in the first grade I was tasked with the most difficult job of creating my very own Mother’s Day card. I was issued a highly sofisticated piece of construction paper and craft supplies to make it fancy. While all of the other kids were engulfed in a cloud of Elmer’s glue and glitter, I sat there quietly pondering what to do. I was overcome with writer’s block and as I sat there the tears started to well up.
My teacher, who was marching around in supervisor mode, stopped at my table and asked me why I had not started. She saw the look of complete panic that was prominently displayed across my tiny face so she plopped herself down in the miniature chair next to me and offered to help. As she sat there prompting me to think of all the ways I could tell my mom I love her, it came to me. I will tell my mom that I love her just like something else that I love!
“I love you….. like….. a feather.”
It was perfect!
I adorned the card with a fluffy white feather I pulled from the craft box and I was set. I ran home so excited to give my mom this masterpiece of a card!
I must have really nailed it because 30 something years later she still has this card tucked away in a keepsake box.
These days I still hold the same affection for feathers. This season feathers are a hot ticket in holiday fashion! I can’t think of a more fun way to go into the holidays than with fun feather accents. While it may seem tricky to style such a bold material, keep it simple and classy and definitely limit your feathers to one piece of your look.
There are several ways that I plan to incorporate feathers into my wardrobe this season, my favorite being these feather sleeves on a tailored suit. This suit is from Zara and it sold out very quickly. I found a great option at Nasty Gal (similar) that comes in white and a beautiful tangerine color.
