If you are like most people, you probably have a closet full of clothes but always think you have nothing to wear. Even the most fashionable people struggle to see the potential in the things they already have and look longingly at the things that they don’t. But there are some things that you can do to take your outfits to the next level without running out and buying all new stuff.
- Heavy metal details: Adding metal is a sure fire way to make any outfit look expensive even if it’s not. Just throwing on a chunky necklace or bracelet, or both can elevate your look. I love to add pieces with chain detail to my basics to glam them up. There are so many designers and boutiques that have beautiful metal detail accessories available at a range of price points. Here are a few favorites:
JW Anderson Chain- Embellished Leather Slides
Ben-Amun Gold Plated Chain Bracelet
Gold Chain Dumpling Bag from Vege Label
Gold Necklace by Laura Lombardi
2. Put a blazer on it: Repeat after me…. Blazers aren’t just for work! Throwing a blazer on is like an instant style boost. There’s power in those lapels! And guess what? You can add one to anything. Pajamas? Sure! Sweats? Absolutely! Athleisure? Jeans? Dresses? Yes, yes, and yes! I find that my blazers really are the most versatile and most worn pieces in my closet because they can be worn so many ways. Theres always room in my wardrobe for more blazers and here are some that I am eyeing:
Army Green Faux Leather Blazer by The Frankie Shop
Printed Satin Blazer by Rotate
Collarless Wool Blazer by Lou Lou Studio
3. Make it oversized: When I say oversized, I mean o-ver-sized! I can’t explain why, but wearing something that is just ridiculously enormous adds a strange level of unexpected sophistication. Just look at Mary Kate and Ashley. They have adopted this way of dressing. They have been roaming around NYC in giant, simple, beautifully crafted clothes for decades and have built a fashion empire and an impeccable industry reputation based on this. So whether you size up when you buy, source intentionally oversized fits, or or borrow from Dad, you are sure to knock your look out of the park with this one. The market is full of meant to be big choices right now but my favorites are from The Frankie Shop:
Obsessed with this oversized tee from Frankie Shop
This Blouse which I have in a variety of colors!
4. Pair neutrals with bold accessories: I’d be willing to bet that somewhere in the depths of your closet lie some brightly colored accessories and I’m going to need you to dig them out. The idea here is to pair these items with something more neutral to create contrast. By adding a fun pop of color, you can take your basics from blah to eye catching with just that one simple trick. These are my must have color pop accessories:
Bottega Veneta Mules
A Jacquemus bag is a must!
I would die for these gloves by Dries Van Noten
5. Go monochrome: Wearing the same color from head to toe is a pro-move to upgrade a look. You can do this with any color, though I tend to stick with softer color palettes or even black or white to keep my outfit looking luxe. Keep your accessories to a minimum since the show stopper will be the cohesion of your pieces. This is how I would create an all white/neutral monochrome look:
Top: Ao Yem Crocheted Top
Pants: Loulou Studio
Shoes: Jacquemus
Bag: Valentino Garavani
Hopefully this will give you some ideas to go shop your closet, add a piece here and there, and start making your clothes work for you!
