On Pointe: The Ballet Core Aesthetic

The term ballet core is trending in fashion. But what exactly does it mean?

A ‘core’ fashion trend is one that is based on a trending style aesthetic. Last season was full of pink.  From a pink runway show at Maison Valentino to a pop culture film phenomenon about our favorite pink icon, ‘barbie core’ was the ruling force of late 2022 to mid 2023.  Now that this trend has peaked we are seeing new ideas take center stage.  Ballet core will continue to be a defining trend for this winter into next spring.

Ballet core takes it’s influence from dance but is not quite as literal as wearing a tutu and leotard to prance down the sidewalk.  The thing I love about the ballet core trend is that it is subtle.  Barbiecore was loud.  Ballet core is more like a whisper than a yell.  Think soft colors and neutrals grounded with black.  Femininity is reflected with soft flowy fabrics like satin, sheer overlays, and simple silhouettes.  Mary Jane style ballet flats are being paired with leggings and cardigans.  Headbands and hair bows are added to simple black dresses and heels.  Leg warmers are even getting thrown into the mix paired with pleated miniskirts and tights.

Many designer runways are embracing the ballet core trend, most recently at Chanel with a delicate display of tulle and ruffles at Paris couture week.  The elegance of these pieces is making a statement of timeless femininity.  The ballet inspired shoes at Jacquemus featured here are a statement in and of themselves.  Their simplistic take on a pointe shoe infused in a black pump make a strong case for the wearability of high design.

Simple pieces like these have major styling power because they are able to capture the aesthetic without turning your look  into something too literal.  Adding a piece like this to a simple dress or to a t-shirt and jeans combo can help you attain the aesthetic with one statement piece.

There are lots of ways to incorporate ballet core into your wardrobe.  Here are some of my favorites to help you get the look:
