An Afternoon at Fort King George

I love living in coastal Georgia. Yes it’s hot and humid and gnatty (if that’s even a word). But it’s also full of history, beautiful waterways, haunting oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and a calming coastal breezes.

I sometimes forget the splendor of where I live but am fortunate enough to have family in other parts of the state who love to visit and take it all in. It makes me look at things in a whole new light to go from area local to tourist.

My sister came to town for such a visit. She stumbled across this historic site about 45 minutes outside of Savannah called Fort King George. We loaded up her kiddos and went to check it out.

The original fort was built in the early 1700’s but had since faded into history. It was rediscovered in the mid 1900s and over the years the significance of the fort was uncovered by local historians. Reconstruction of the original structures has taken place and the site has been put on the National registry of historic places.

This fort is open for public tours and has living history presentations, walking trails, a small educational center, and the cutest gift shop.

You can walk through a self guided tour and learn all about the different historical phases of the site including the original ruins found on the property.

You can go inside all of the the reconstructed buildings and experience what life would have been like in those days.

Just the most gorgeous breeze through the moss

I would be remiss if I didn’t include some fashion. It was chilly for us on this adventure so I wore my favorite Frankie shop sweatshirt paired with a pair of jeans by Stella McCartney and my favorite Stella coat (similar). This isn’t the place to wear nice shoes as you will be walking on grass and dirt, so I would choose a boot or sneaker that you don’t mind wearing in these conditions. If you go in the summer I would definitely dress for hot and humid conditions and don’t forget to pack the bug spray. The marsh gnats will get you!

We are just a little cold :). This photo has also been deemed our version of Bernie Sanders on Inauguration Day.

This place is definitely worth a day trip. It is family friendly so bring the kids. Let me know in the comments if you visit Fort King George and tell me what you enjoy most!

xoxo Mimi
