The Emily In Paris Effect

If you are a fashion lover I probably don’t have to tell you that when it comes to on-point style inspiration, Emily in Paris is the show to watch. The show centers around Emily Cooper, a Chicago based marketing manager who unexpectedly finds herself moving to Paris to work at a newly acquired branch. She bulldozes in as American as they come, full of pre-conceived ideas about Paris, a workaholic attitude, and some offensive to Paris fashion choices that her stylish Parisian counterparts label as ‘basic’. If you have somehow missed the memo on this campy yet endearing Netflix offering, run don’t walk, to your sofa for a fashion forward binge fest that will leave you reimagining your closet and dreaming of living your own Parisian adventure.

Now in season three (and season four coming later this year), the characters in Emily in Paris are flaunting all the most luxurious fashion brands including many I like to categorize as fashion unicorns, or brands that you are unlikely to see in the wild. The cast is donning both lesser known brands like Ami Paris, Essentiel Antwerp, and Hood by Air along with lots of heavy hitters like Schiaparelli, Magda Bytrum, Paco Rabbane, and the legendary Vivienne Westwood. And regardless of the fact that these marketing jobs likely don’t pay enough to support this caliber wardrobe and Emily’s closet in her apartment is roughly the size of a baguette, somehow Emily and her entourage are always dressed to the gills in cutting edge fashion and I am here for it. And just like other iconically fashionable shows that have solidified their place in pop culture, Parisian influence is bleeding over IRL in what I like to call the Emily in Paris effect.

Emily in Paris

The Emily in Paris effect is the subtle french-i-fi-cation that is popping up everywhere as a result of the show’s fashionable influence.  For example, I was downtown a few weeks ago and I passed a woman on the sidewalk who was wearing a beret.  It is not a fashion item that you typically see strolling around a deeply southern US city so I immediately took notice.  The more I observed, the more French inspired clothing passed by me.  Navy and white striped shirts, trench coats, white trousers paired with crisp light blue blouses, and of course Emily Cooper’s signature colorful prints.

Emily in Paris

Paris has been known as a powerhouse fashion city since the 17th century thanks to King Louis XIV’s deep appreciation for fashion and his push to develop the textile industry in France.  French influence in fashion has been a constant in the industry since, but it is not something that you see everyday in the US as we have our own unique fashion identity. Seeing a beret trotting down the streets of Savannah, Ga proves that this show’s influence runs deep and I am sounding the alarm that French girl chic/ the Emily in Paris effect is coming to a sidewalk near you.

In the show, each of the four main female characters have very unique but strong fashion point of views.  As the show progresses, I love that the styling of the characters is evolving and telling its own story.  There is some subtle fashion influencing happening between these ladies and I am excited to see how this evolution continues.   I have pulled together some of my favorite Emily in Paris fashion inspiration so you can shop your favorite! I’ll just be over here brushing up on my high school French, with a baguette and a bottle of rose’ patiently waiting on season four to make its way into my living room.  Salut!
